Article Summary
This article presents how cryptography can be used as a weapon. Julian Assange does a great job of explaining to us how cryptography is used today throughout many different countries. He explains that larger countries can use cryptography to ‘attack’ other smaller countries. For example 99% of messages to and from South America physically run around the US border and there is no law against the U.S. reading these foreign messages. The United States sell technologythat scramble and unscramble messages using cryptography. They are supposed to keep others messages secret, but really they are used to steal them, as when these messages from foreign countries come through, the US intercepts them and unscrambles them, revealing secrets from foreign government. These secrets can be very important to other countries and used as weapons to backstab other countries. It is explained that the U.S. has learned how to use the stuxnet, flame, and duqu viruses, which can be used to attack smaller countries. They have used this once on Iran already, just to undermine their attempt at having higher authority.
I feel this way of stealing other foreign countries’ messages will be very crucial in the future. Many countries feel that they are well protected using these types of encryption when really they are not. The U.S. steals and will continue to steal these things that they feel are really secured. The information we take can be really important to these countries and in our possession, we can be very powerful.
